- Determine exactly where the humidor will be located.
- If you are placing the humidor where the temperature will affect your humidity control, you may want to consider a cigar cabinet with temperature control.
- You will also want to make sure that the cigar humidor or cabinet meshes with your style and home décor.
- Decide if you will purchase a standard cabinet or need to design a custom cabinet, a built-in humidor or cigar lockers.
- Based on your cigar collection, choose the interior components
- Determine what will be stored loose
- For loose cigars you will need interior components like bins with dividers, which work with Desktops, End Tables, and Display cabinets.

6. Wood & Finish
The wood and finish you choose for your humidor are what will ultimately provide its characteristics and give it its uniqueness profile:
Exterior Wood: Mahogany is the most widely used wood for the exterior of any humidor built by Vigilant.
- It is resistant to decay, warping, mold, and mildew.
- It is also grown in the same environment as tobacco and therefore has similarities.
- Custom wood types include: Cherry, Walnut, Oak, Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Birds Eye Maple, Bamboo
Interior Wood: All humidors built by Vigilant are lined with Spanish Cedar and Mahogany.
- Mahogany lines the cabinets.
- Spanish cedar lines the drawers. Loose cigars stored in drawers should be next to Spanish cedar as the aroma marries with the tobacco to enhance the taste.
Finishes:
- Standard finishes include: Shaker Maple, Chestnut, Cordovan, Ebonized Black
- Custom finishes are available for a fee
- The interior wood is left unfinished so it can absorb and hold the humidity to maintain homeostasis.
